HSL Chairs are Backed by Science. Meet Our University Research Partner.
We’re proud to work with the University of Leeds to research the physiological impacts of sitting in a HSL chair that fits you. Leading that research is Dr Andrea Utley, a Reader in Motor Control and Learning in the School of Biomedical Sciences.
Dr Utley leads the Human Performance at Leeds group, using a variety of different methods and techniques to explore all aspects of human movement and performance, including how we learn to move.
Here at HSL, we take the findings of Dr Utley’s great work to improve our furniture, making sure that they’re built for the way people actually move, and that they offer support in all the right places. That’s just one of the reasons why we’re able to offer feel good furniture, with our Comfort Specialists offering in-depth advice to help you find the right chair for you.

Dr Andrea says:
“My work and research has focused on movement and how we control and learn to move and develop movement skills. This work has included the assessment of movement and considered how manipulating the movement context can influence how we control our movements.
I have also utilised the techniques that we use to assess movement, such as 3D analysis, in the work place. This work has been applied to product design, proof of concept studies and product efficacy.
It is vital that universities have close connections with the community and industry so that we can share knowledge and experience.”
